While Salmon Chase was United States Secretary of Treasury under President Lincoln, the Bureau of Engraving was established in 1862 to print the government's first currency to finance the war. The currency was known as "greenbacks" because of their color. The National Banking System was created in 1863 to establish a uniform currency.
