Union Officer's "Shell Jacket"
A shorter more comfortable version of the standard dark-blue unifor four-button wool
"sack coat" this nine button "shell jacket" was the coat of choice for young Union Army officers.
Shell jackets were lined with polished cotton or light burlap for added warmth and usually had an
inside left brest pocket.
