The Ohio Historical Society is a rich repository of Ohio's history. The
printable informational brochures listed below provides background
information for teachers who may be unfamiliar with the state, or are
looking for additional information and materials to enhance their
teaching of Ohio history. The information found in this section offers
additional content information about Ohio from the files of the
Educational Services office as well as from the Ohio Education Resource

Brochure: People of the Past: Ohio's Prehistoric Cultures ( 13,567 k)
This printable brochure briefly highlights the indigenous people who
lived in before history was recorded. These people are believed to have
arrived on the North American continent from Asia nearly 20,000 years
ago. Some of these people existed in Ohio following the ice age until
approximately 1550 CE (AD). Because of the artifacts they left behind,
those most familiar to us are the moundbuilders.
Brochure: American Indian Tribes of Ohio ( 7,620 k)
This printable brochure examines the ways of the American Indian tribes
who migrated into Ohio beginning around 1655 CE (AD) and remained until
the Indian Removal Act closed their chapter in 1843 CE (AD). There were
many tribes but those most familiar to us are the Shawnee, Miami,
Delaware, Ottawa, and Wyandot. We know more of these people because
they lived in Ohio during the time when history was written down.

This printable brochure provides an overview of the era of Ohio history
during early settlement or the pioneer period and beyond. It also
includes other Ohio facts such as the symbols, governors, presidents,
famous Ohioans, etc.
Brochure: From a Territory to a State ( 7,612 k)
This printable brochure includes activities to help the student
understand the transition from being a part of the Northwest Territory
to the Enabling Act passed by congress to allow it to become 17th state
to join the nation.
Brochure: Documenting Ohio's Statehood ( 1,341 k)
This printable brochure presents a timeline, documents, and maps between
1787 through 1812 during the when Ohio was preparing for and settling in
as a new state. There are activities for the student that reinforce
this important time.
Brochure: Ohio, Mother of Presidents ( 3,138 k)
This printable color pamphlet dedicates a page to each of the Ohio
citizens who were to become presidents of the United States. There were
eight - giving Ohio the nickname "Mother of Presidents".
