Led by Joseph Bimeler, the Zoarites came to America in 1817 seeking freedom from religious persecution. Bimeler and his followers separated from the Lutheran church in Germany and through the Northwest Ordinance, Ohio ensured the religious freedom sought by the Zoarites.

After two harsh winters in Ohio, the Zoarites formed a society where all property and work were equally shared. This experiment in communal living lasted until 1898 when the Society of Separatists of Zoar disbanded and divided their assets among the remaining members.

Programs Available
Grades K-2
Old School Zoar: What was school like for the boys and girls in Zoar? Where did they live? What did they learn? Explore the village first, learning about a child’s life in Zoar, then spend time with our schoolmarm in the 1860s schoolhouse.

Grades 3-5
Trade, Steal, or Share?: Discover why the Zoarites formed their unique community! Explore four historic buildings through a trade game, hands-on activities, and a lesson in communal life. Finish the day with a short adventure through the rest of the village.
