A visit to Flint Ridge State Memorial is a trip to a site that most likely has seen human activity as long as people have been in Ohio. The flint of Flint Ridge was well known in the ancient world for evidence of small amounts of it have been found across present day eastern United States at American Indian sites. Because of this flint's great beauty, it has been respected and used throughout the ages as tools, weapons, and ceremonial objects of the native cultures and in modern times in the production of jewelry.

The following tours/programs have condensed files that include links, content standards and other resources.

Guided Tour: Grounds and Museum (September, October, April, and May) (258 k)
Description: This tour incorporates the grounds and museum in recognition of the uniqueness of Flint Ridge. The Museum concentrates on how flint was formed, how it can be predictably shaped into tools, as well as prehistoric associations with the highly colored Flint Ridge material that found its way into their ancient trade routes. A network of hiking trails within the 525-acre park compliments the context of the museum by emphasizing the uniqueness of a mature hardwood forest, that is affected by the thin soil and abundance of flint.

Pamphlet: History of Flint Ridge (September, October, April, and May) (1,741 k)
Description: Learn of the importance of one of the nation's richest flint source - Flint Ridge in Ohio. From the earliest times to the present, flint has been highly valued as a material that had lent itself to many uses from tools to modern-day gemstones.

Outreach Program: Licking County Natural and Historical Sites (1,741 k)
Description: This program brings the rich pre-historic history of Licking County to your students. It emphasizes the importance of how Flint Ridge has attracted people for thousands of years to quarry its abundant supply of rich flint. Additionally, the great geometric earthworks located in Newark are analyzed and discussed. This outreach Program can be presented in your classroom if you are within a 45-mile radius of Flint Ridge.
