The Ohio Historical Center is the state's repository for its comprehensive collections of materials in
the fields of history, prehistory, and natural history. It also houses the state's archives and
historical library.
The Ohio Village is on the grounds of the Ohio Historical Society complex. The Ohio Village is a reproduction of a small Ohio community during the 1800s. The buildings form the commercial, social, and political core of a town and they represent several architectural styles of Ohio's history. The furnishings, items, and tools in the various buildings used by the Ohio Village interpreters are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions. The buildings and streets form a physical background for the presentation of the economic, social, and political life in Ohio during the 1800s.
Permanent and changing exhibits interpret the story of Ohio for the public. History exhibits focus on early settlement, transportation, the Civil War, industry and Civil Rights and reforms. "The Nature of Ohio" showcases the state's geology, flora, and fauna. A program of changing and special exhibits, including the new “Windows To Our Collections," constitutes visible storage and electronic interpretive media.
At the library, materials for historians, genealogists, researchers, and other specialists are
available in the form of printed materials, including many rare manuscripts, audiovisual materials,
and on microfilm.
The Center is the Ohio Historical Society's business headquarters, from which it administers its
preservation and educational programs and manages its sites throughout Ohio.
Ohio Historical Center is one of more than sixty sites operated by the Ohio Historical Society. The
Ohio Historical Society is a private, nonprofit organization that serves as the state's partner in
preserving and interpreting Ohio's history, archaeology, and natural history.
