Norman Rockwell is one of our best-loved artists because he tells us the stories of ordinary people and reminds us of our best ideals and qualities. A visit to the exhibit Rockwell's America: Celebrating the Art of Norman Rockwell introduces students to the world of this talented man and helps them to sharpen their skills in reading, thinking, observing, and communicating.

The exhibit features theatrical educational environments and multimedia experiences that not only captivate young minds but also provide plenty of hands-on opportunities to explore, investigate, and try things out. Teachers can choose to pursue one or more tracks that best align with their own classroom goals and students' interests. Pre-visit activities, on-site experiences, multidisciplinary standards-based lessons that can be used before or after a visit, and post-visit culminating experiences can be combined in any number of ways to meet your students' needs.

Consider the materials here, select a track, and make your reservation today by calling 614.297.2663 or e-mailing jleffler@ohiohistory.org.

Visual Arts Track: "Just Imagine"
Ohio Academic Content Standards: Visual Arts – Creative Expression and Communication, Grade 3 A1&2, C5&6; Grade 4 A1; Grade 5 A2
Imagination is the artist’s best tool. Students will explore Norman Rockwell's studio, learn about the tools a visual artist uses, and use art vocabulary. They will investigate the way Rockwell uses the elements of his paintings to tell a story and how artists use their imaginations to create a message and an experience through art. Drawing, painting, writing, "reading" a painting, and jigsawing are but a few of the activities that will appeal to your students.

Technology Track: "Times of Change"
Ohio Academic Content Standards: Technology – Technology and Society Interaction, Grade 4 A1, C2; Grade 5 A2
Students will examine the ways that Norman Rockwell's art tells America's story during times of change. His works are, after all, "20th-century American history on canvas." They will investigate technologies like the automobile, the telephone, and television, and compare the objects from Rockwell's time in the exhibit to those they have today. Opportunities abound to reflect on how changes affect people's lives and how technology in particular is so often part of that change. Comparing/contrasting, timelines, inventions, and more are part of "Times of Change."

Social Studies Track: "City Sidewalks and Country Towns"
Ohio Academic Content Standards: Social Studies – History, Grade 3 C3; Grade 4 C6
Students will step into Rockwell's time and compare everyday life in the city and the country. They will learn how his early experiences led him to become an artist, and explore the social changes that Norman Rockwell portrayed in his art. These changes include the urbanization of our society, the changing roles of women in the 1940s, and civil rights in the 1960s. Reading a biography of Rockwell's early life, identifying influential people, places and events, examining Rockwell's self-portrait, and creating their own add up to learning fun in "City Sidewalks and Country Towns."
