Tours Information
There are many areas of interest at the Adena site, and preplanning your time at the site will make a
much more valuable educational experience for your students.
For staffing purposes, tours of the Worthington mansion must be scheduled in advance.
Costs are:
Students: $3.00 admission
Program: $3.00 admission add $1.00 per student
Chaperones: $3.00 admission
Teachers: Free
Listed below are some suggested tours, and some have condensed files that include links,
content standards and other resources.

Assisted Tour: Adena Mansion (September, October, April, May, June) ( 53 k)
Students will be guided through the twenty-room mansion of Thomas Worthington. The
will see the affluence and influence of Worthington, sixth governor of Ohio,
businessman, and farmer.

Assisted Tour: The Worthington Family (September, October, April, May,

The purpose of this tour is to explore the lives of an affluent, early nineteenth
century family.
Assisted Tour: Mansion and Garden (September, October, April, May, June) ( 55 k)
Educators seeking enrichment in Decorative Arts, Culinary Arts and Nutrition,
Textiles, Political Science, Antiques, and Language arts will benefit from this
assisted tour.

With this assisted tours students will learn of various kinds of plant life and to
understand the place of flora in our environment.

This tour offers a comparison and contrast of the varied groups of people who lived
and worked at the Adena Estate.

Assisted Tour: Farm Community (September, October, April, May,

This tour explores the people, material, and animals involved in a working
nineteenth century farm and how they worked together to produce products and an
acceptable way of life.

This tour demonstrates the uses of goods and services in the new state of Ohio.
Students learn about the economics of early Ohio.

Assisted Tour: Government and Politics (September, October, April, May,

In this tour students will explore early politics in the establishment of statehood
for Ohio. They will see the Vista that inspired the Great Seal of Ohio.

Program: Harvest Days (October 4 or 5, 2007) ( 60 k)
This program is that of harvest and preparation for winter and the daily
lives of the residents who lived on the Adena Farm in the early 1800s.
Students will compare the duties of the groups of individuals who lived
on the farm.

Program: From a Territory to a State (May 10 or 11, 2007)

This program depicts the social, political, and cultural implications of
the movement of Ohio'' people from a territory to statehood. Students
will observe the impact of this on the various groups of individuals the
American Indian, the immigrant, and formerly enslaved persons.

In partnership with the Ross-Chillicothe Library, children will
participate in a story time to foster interest in books and encourage
listening skills. The librarian will select three books ealing with
some aspect of the settleing of Ohio.
