Get Out the Vote (Year-round) ( 57 k)
Marion was in its glory during the summer of
1920! Imagine having a presidential candidate campaign from his front porch
right in your town! Students will listen to Mr. Harding explain some of his
ideas for America himself and tap our toes to some snappy campaign songs, see
historical photographs. The class will make their own campaign ribbons and vote
using an authentic 1920s ballot box. This outreach Program can be presented in
your classroom if you are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
Kids Rule (Year-round) ( 53 k)
This popular program takes a look at children in
1890s Marion, Ohio. What did "their" Marion look like at that time? What did
people wear? What were their schools like and what did pupils study? And, most
importantly, what did they do for fun? This program features plenty of hands-on
experiences, primary and secondary sources. This Outreach Program can be
presented in your classroom if you are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
The Faces of Ohio (Year-round) ( 61 k)
Students will learn how people from so many
different countries ended up in Ohio in the 1800s and the first part of the 20th
century. What industries and opportunities did they find in Marion? The program
examines how immigration shaped Ohio and the sacrifices they people made to
journey to America. This outreach program can be presented in your classroom if
you are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
Tides of Change: Ohio and the Great War (Year-round) ( 56 k)
Warren G. Harding was
a U.S. Senator during World War I. Using a large display board, students will
participate in filling Europe with the latest technology available for warfare in
1917 - tanks, aircraft, artillery, battleships, and dreaded poison gas. They
will discuss the effects of those weapons on the soldiers and the civilian.
Students can examine artifacts and popular music of the time. This program can
be presented in your classroom if you are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
Time Travelers (Year-round) ( 56 k)
This is time-traveling at its best - using
primary sources to demonstrate change over time in a dramatic way! Students work
in pairs, using reprinted 1899, 1912 and 1919 editions of The Marion Daily Star,
all edited by our 29th President, Warren G. Harding. We embark upon a "shopping
trip," finding advertisements in the newspapers for household goods and clothing
we need to furnish our Victorian-era home. Our 20-year time traveling trip not
only familiarizes students with the "modern" gadgets of the early 20th century,
but demonstrates how vital newcomers with new businesses are to the growth of a
typical small town economy. This program can be presented in your classroom if
you are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
Hail to the Chief (Year-round) ( 54 k)
Students will be introduced to the president and not just his role in
office but his responsibilities - through a learning tool called a
Presidential Job Box. They will also learn of many symbols of American
life. This outreach Program can be presented in your classroom if you
are within a 45-mile radius of Marion.
Ohio Town (Year-round) ( 70 k)
This program revolves around life in a fictional town - Ohio Town -
which actually will be set up - in miniature form in front of the
children. Students will meet the townsfolk and also learn a craft. This
outreach Program can be presented in your classroom if you are within a
45-mile radius of Marion.
Buckeye Presidents (Year-round) ( The eight Ohio presidents are in the spotlight in this program, but
it’s hard to keep them straight! Based on a timeline approach, the class,
as a group, figures out where each Buckeye president belongs in history.
The class then plots each president’s home, gravesite or monument on
individual maps of Ohio to put each man in his place in the state. This
program is a perfect complement to Get Out the Vote or can stand alone.
